How it works

Coins

  • Coins are play money. They have no value, can't be bought, can't be cashed out and can't be given to another player.
  • There are no prizes.
  • You start with 1,000 coins and can claim 100 more once each day (New Zealand time).
  • You must be 18 or over to play.

What you bet on

Each bet is on how late one train arrives at Wellington Station, measured against the timetable. You pick one of five outcomes:

OutcomeArrival
Early (over 1 min)More than 1 minute early
On timeFrom 1 minute early to under 2 minutes late
2–5 min late2 minutes to under 5 minutes late
5–10 min late5 minutes to under 10 minutes late
10+ min late10 minutes late or more

Odds and limits

  • Before a train leaves, odds are set from each line's past punctuality.
  • Once it is on its way, odds are live: they follow the train's reported delay and change with every update, and betting is paused while live data is missing. Live betting closes when the train reaches its last stop before Wellington, or three minutes before its predicted arrival.
  • Odds are fixed when you place the bet. If they change while you're confirming, you're asked again.
  • A winning bet pays your stake multiplied by the odds, rounded down to a whole coin.
  • The stake is between 10 coins and a quarter of your balance, up to 5,000.
  • The most one bet can pay is 50,000 coins, or 10,000 in an account's first 7 days.

Daily cards

  • Each day has a morning card (arrivals 7 to 9 AM) and an evening card (4:30 to 6:30 PM) of about five trains, when enough run.
  • You pick one outcome for every train and choose a stake. The picks' odds multiply together, and every pick must be right to win.
  • Entries close when the card's first train leaves. One entry per player per card; stake limits are the same as for single bets.
  • A cancelled or bus-replaced train drops out of the card and its odds are removed. If every train drops out, the stake is refunded.

Daily specials

  • Line over/under. Will more than the stated share of a line's trains arrive within 5 minutes today? The share is set from the line's recent fortnight. Cancelled and bus-replaced trains are left out of the count. Open the evening before; closes when the line's first train leaves.
  • Worst line of the day. Which line produces the day's longest reported delay at Wellington. A tie between lines is a dead heat: winning bets are paid at their odds divided by the number of lines tied.
  • Exact minute. The whole minute of a train's reported delay: under 1 (which includes early), 1 to 9, or 10 and over. Priced from the line's recent delays at that time of day; closes when the train leaves.
  • A line or day market is void, and stakes are refunded, if fewer than half of its trains got a result. One not yet settled by 2 AM the next day is voided too.

Settlement

  • The result is the arrival delay Metlink's real-time data reports for Wellington, taken once the reported arrival time has passed. Metlink carries this figure forward from the train's last stop, so it can differ slightly from what you see on the platform.
  • If that report is missing, the time the train's GPS position reaches the station is used instead.

Void bets

A bet is void, and the stake is refunded in full, when:

  • the train is cancelled
  • the train is replaced by a bus
  • no arrival is recorded within 45 minutes of the scheduled time (or 30 minutes of the predicted time, if later)
  • an administrator voids the market, for example after a data fault

The reason is shown with the bet.

Leaderboards and the feed

  • Profit is payouts minus stakes on settled bets and cards. Bonuses and refunded stakes don't count.
  • The weekly board resets every Monday at midnight, New Zealand time.
  • The wins feed shows big wins and long shots by handle. Share pages show the same details and nothing else about the player.

Terms

  • You must be 18 or over to have an account.
  • Coins are play money with no value. They can't be bought, sold, cashed out or transferred.
  • One account per person. Handles that are offensive or impersonate someone will be reset, and accounts that abuse the game may be banned.
  • Results come from Metlink's real-time data as described above. An administrator may void or correct a market after a data fault; stakes are refunded or re-settled accordingly.
  • The game may change or stop at any time. Coins carry no entitlement.
  • We store your sign-in email, handle and bets. Ask for your account to be deleted and it will be, along with its history.
